Room Selection Q and A

Below are the most Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have a specific question that is not addressed, please feel free to contact us.

1. What is MyHousing?

MyHousing is an on-line Room Selection program.  The program can be acessed through Cardinal Station.  On MyHousing you will be able to:

  • See your current room assignment,
  • See your current dining plan,
  • Accept your Residence Hall and Dining Services Agreement,
  • Select roommates for 2008-2009,
  • Select your dining plan for 2008-2009,
  • See your lottery number and selection time, and
  • Select your room for 2008-2009.

2. How do I participate in Room Selection?

All current residents and non-resident seniors who participated in the 2007 Room Selection Lottery (but were unable to receive a space because none were available when their lottery turn became live) are eligible for participation in Room Selection 2008.  To participate you should submit an Intent Form, the $500 prepayment, and, if interested in Living Learning programs, the approriate application.  The deadline for submission of materials is February 8, 2008.

3. What is the $500 prepayment? Is it refundable?

The $500 prepayment is required to participate in Room Selection.  The housing prepayment is generally not refundable unless you are not required to live in housing and are unable to select a space during the Jr/Sr or Graduate lotteries.  The $500 prepayment indicates your commitment to reside in on-campus housing for the entire 2008-2009 Academic Year and will be applied toward your Fall 2008 semester housing charges.  Requests to cancel housing will be approved as described in the Residence Hall and Dining Services Agreement.  Approved requests may incur the $500 Housing Cancellation Fee.  In these cases your $500 prepayment will be applied to the Housing Cancellation Fee.  For more information on the prepayment visit the application page.

4. Am I required to live on-campus?

CUA strongly believes in the benefits that on-campus living has to offer to our first and second year students in terms of academic success, personal development and involvement within the CUA campus community.  As such, CUA requires all freshmen and sophomore undergraduate students to live in on-campus housing.  Please refer to http://policies.cua.edu/studentlife/housing//housingreq.cfm for more information on this policy.

For Room Selection, students who have less than 55 credits are required to live on-campus and will participate in the Sophomore Lottery. Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students are not guaranteed housing and will participate in a Junior/Senior Lottery or a Graduate Lottery.

5. Am I guaranteed a room on-campus?

The university requires all freshman and sophomore undergraduate students to live in campus housing.  As is the case on most residential campuses, on-campus housing for junior and senior students is not automatically guaranteed.  Additionally, housing is very limited for graduate students. During the Spring semester, a lottery is conducted where interested junior and senior students may select housing from available rooms for the next academic year.  Housing Services also offers guidance to upperclass and graduate students seeking off-campus residence.

6. As a Junior or Senior, what are my chances of being able to select a space during Room Selection?

In light of the University’s Freshman and Sophomore Housing Requirement and planned enrollment growth, the specific amount of spaces available to Juniors and Seniors next year will be determined after the Intent Form deadline of February 8.

7. Where do Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors live?

Where students live on-campus depends on many things: gender, class status, participation in Specialty Housing, and other factors.

8. What are the deadlines and important dates for Room Selection?

The deadline for Intent Forms is February 8 at 5pm.  You must have completed this step to be eligible for participation in Room Selection.  For more dates, please click here

9. I missed the deadline to submit my Intent Form and Prepayment.  Do I have any options?

The deadline for Intent Forms is February 8 at 5pm.  Your options depend on whether you will be required to live on campus next Fall.

  • If you will have less than 55 credits at the conclusion of the Spring semester, you will be required to live on campus next year.  You should still submit the Intent Form and $500 Housing Prepayment to Housing Services.  The Intent Form will be accepted, but it will be identified as a late submission.  Late submissions will receive a lottery number, but it will be generated after the lottery numbers for all sophomores who submitted their paperwork before the deadline have been assigned.
    • As of 3/26/08, Housing Services will still accept a late Intent Form and housing prepayment from a rising sophomore but the student will not be given a lottery number.  Due to the heavy response from late sophomore submissions, HS wants to ensure that students currently with lottery numbers are given priority in selecting a space.  The students who continue to submit the Intent Form and prepayment will be placed on the Guaranteed Housing Wait List and will be given an assignment after the lotteries have ended.
  • If you will have 55 credits or more at the conclusion of the Spring semester, or are a Graduate student, you are not required to live on campus.  Late Intent Forms will generally not be accepted unless you have significant, uncontrollable, and unforeseen circumstances that warrant an exception.

10. I am applying to be a Resident Assistant or Campus Minister next year; should I submit my Room Selection materials?

If you will want on campus housing if you are not offered a residential staff position, you should submit your materials by the Intent Form deadline of February 8.  If you do accept a residential staff position, your housing prepayment will be refunded to you.  Once you accept your position, please contact us so we can initiate your refund.

11. How are Lottery Numbers assigned?

Lottery Numbers are randomly assigned to participants based on class standing. The number of anticipated credits you will have earned by the end of the Spring 2008 semester determines your class standing for the process.  The following chart illustrates the ranges and their corresponding Lottery Number groups:

Credits Academic Status
54 or less Sophomores
55 or more Juniors and Seniors
** Graduate

** Graduate status is determined by enrollment status.

Your credit information/enrollment status is maintained by the Registrar’s office. When you submit your Intent Form, Housing Services will confirm your credit status based upon in-progress credits for Spring and already completed credits.  If you have taken a class for non-credit, these credits do not count in your completed credit load. It is the student's responsibility to insure all applicable transfer and other credits have been submitted to the Registrar for processing.

12. How will I receive my lottery number?

Your lottery number will be available by February 21 by logging into MyHousing.  At this time you may begin selecting your roommates and setting room preferences prior to the selection sessions.  Look for more information on the Housing Services website and in your CUA email regarding the online MyHousing system.

13. What do I need to select a room during selection?

You will need to have logged into MyHousing and preselected your roommate(s).  In order for your group to be eligible to select, it is important that each member has accepted every other group member and withdrawn any extra outstanding roommate invitations if applicable. If any roommate invitations are still pending, the group will not be able to select.  Once each member of the group has confirmed each roommate, the person from your group with the lowest lottery number is responsible for the room selection on behalf of the group.  He or she will not be able to select until the lottery number becomes active.  All selection times are based on the university computer server time.

14. Can I choose who my roommate will be?

You can select other students participating in your Room Selection Lottery to be your roommate(s). Those wishing to be roommates will need to pre-select and accept each other as roommates.  Once the group is confirmed, their group's lottery number will become the lowest Lottery Number of the pair/group. This is called a Pull-In.

Pull-In rules vary for Specialty Housing; please refer to the Specialty Housing applications for more information.

For selection in suites and apartments, groups will need to select an entire suite or apartment together by completley filling the unit. However, if a suite or apartment is not available to accommodate the whole group, the group will need to reconfigure and select a unit based on the new group size and the lowest Lottery Number in the new group.

If a Sophomore would prefer to live with a Junior or Senior, he/she should contact Housing Services to make this request.  If the request for the Sophomore to live with the Junior and Senior is granted, the selection of the group will be limited to the Sophomore Room Selection lottery and only Sophomore designated areas of campus will be available to the group.  If the Junior or Senior is not eligible to select, the Sophomore will be able to select from remaining spaces in Sophomore designated areas.

15. Can I keep my same assignment for the 2008-2009 academic year?

Residents are not able to keep their housing assignments from year to year.  However, if your lottery number permits you to select the same room, you may do so.

16. What are the chances that I will get the exact room that I want?

This is very hard to predict as there are various factors involved including how many residents intend to return, gender designations, and the desirability of the room.  Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to select his/her first preference. HS recommends that you or your group have a list of at least five housing options.  This will be especially important to Juniors and Seniors who would prefer to live in North Neighborhood 1.

17. Do I need to be on-campus to make my selection?

Because Room Selection will be held online, you do not need to be on-campus.  You will be able to select from anywhere there is internet access and you are able to log into Cardinal Station.

18. I am away on Study Abroad. How can I participate in Room Selection?

Before leaving CUA, you were asked to submit an Intent Form to HS indicating that you wanted to live on-campus for the next year.  HS encourages you to confirm receipt of your Intent Form and prepayment prior to February 8.  You will be able to access MyHousing online through Cardinal Station and can select your roommate(s), room, and dining plans according to your assigned lottery number and time.

19. Can I select a roommate who is currently on Study Abroad?

Yes, you are able to select someone abroad as your roommate provided they have completed the Intent Form, submitted the prepayment, and have received a lottery number.

20. I am graduating in December or studying abroad in Spring 2009; am I still eligible for housing?

Yes, you should submit your Intent Form and $500 prepayment by the advertised deadline to become eligible for a Lottery Number.  If you select a space on-campus, you will need to cancel your Spring 2009 Housing prior to November 15, 2008.

21. Once I select an assignment, can I change my mind?

Once you have selected an assignment you have completed the process.  Room change opportunities will be offered during the Fall semester.  Please check the HS website in late August for more information.

22. I am a Junior or Senior.  What happens if I am not able to select a space during Junior/Senior Selection but still want to live on campus?

If you were not able to make a selection during the Junior/Senior Selection Session you will be able to add your name to the Non-Guaranteed Waitlist.  During the summer months, HS will extend offers to those on the Non-Guaranteed Waitlist as spaces become available.

If you are a Junior or Senior and you do not sign up for the Non-Guaranteed Waitlist, you will be considered an off-campus resident.  If you decide at a later time you would prefer to be on-campus, you will need to apply as a new resident and will be placed after all new Freshmen and those on the Non-Guaranteed Waitlist are placed.

23. When will I receive confirmation of the assignment I selected during Room Selection?

You will receive a confirmation immediately after selecting your space.  This confirmation will be sent to your CUA email account.
