Disability Selection

It is only through a student's voluntary disclosure of a disability and request for accommodation that CUA can support disability needs.

What does it mean to be registered for housing accommodations?

Students with disabilities who would like to receive housing accommodations should contact Housing Services (HS) each year to make a formal request for a housing accommodation.  The required disability documentation only needs to be submitted to Disability Support Services (DSS) with the initial request, unless the student's needs have changed since the last year.

How do I become eligible for a housing accommodation?

Requests for housing accommodations should be made early to allow time to review requests and documentation. In order for a continuing student to be eligible for a disability housing accommodation, the student will need to submit a Room Selection Intent Form, the Housing Accommodation Form, and the $500 prepayment by February 8 to HS.  New students should submit the Housing Acommodation Form with their Residence Hall and Dining Services Application by May 15.  In order for the housing accommodation request to be considered, the student must have documentation of the disability on file in DSS.  To aid in the evaluation process, documentation must include information provided by the student to DSS that confirms the following:

  • Student has a current diagnosis, a history that is the basis of the request, and a documented prognosis.
  • Student has current, substantial disability-based limitations that relate to the residential hall environment.
  • Student’s current treatment, medication, and/or other mitigating measures used or recommended by the provider as they relate to the disability and housing needs.
  • Any substantial medication side effects, if applicable.
  • A complete description of the desired housing configuration and discussion of why this specific accommodation is the necessary accommodation for the student’s disability.
  • An indication of the level of need for the recommended configuration (and the consequences of not receiving it).
    • Is the impact of the condition life threatening if not met?
    • Is there a negative health impact if the request is not met?
    • Is the request an integral component of a treatment plan for the condition in question?

What are the criteria that are considered?

The following criteria are considered when evaluating housing accommodation requests:

  • Is the student required to reside on campus?
  • If the student is not required to live on-campus, is space currently available that meets the student's needs?
  • Are there possible alternatives?
  • Was the request made prior to the application deadline?

How does Disability Selection work for continuing students?

HS will consult with DSS to review housing accommodation requests and documentation.  HS will provide accommodations to continuing students based upon the following:

  • If the student is a rising Sophomore and the requested accommodation is approved and is available, HS will pre-assign the student and notify the student of the assigned space via email. This does not guarantee that the assignment will be in the hall of the student’s preference.  If a student who is pre-assigned a space would prefer an alternate space, the student should participate in the appropriate selection session.  If an alternate space that meets the recommended accommodation is available at their selection opportunity, the student may select that space.
  • For students who are not required to live in campus housing, if the recommended accommodation is related to a health disability that significantly impacts a major life activity and prevents a student from living off campus, and the recommended accommodation is both approved and available, HS will pre-assign and notify the student of the pre-assigned space via email.  If the recommended housing accommodation is not approved and pre-assigned, students will be able to participate in the appropriate Room Selection Lottery based on their class standing.  At the student's selection time the student will be able to select from available on campus spaces, be added to a housing waitlist, or withdraw their housing application and live off campus.
  • Students who are pre-assigned spaces will be able to pull-in a roommate(s) if the assignment is a multiple occupancy room (Double, Triple or Quad) or multi-bedroom units (the Millenniums, Curley Court, and CV).  Any pull-ins need to be eligible for housing.  The student who was pre-assigned would need to notify HS by the advertised deadline if he/she wanted to pull-in a roommate(s).  Otherwise, the space(s) would be filled via the general selection process.

Outside of the initial housing application processes, room changes and accommodation requests are evaluated and approved on a needs-based and space available basis.

All students, regardless of disability status, are expected to pay the current rate of the room they are assigned.  The accommodation is the assignment, not the charging of a differential rate.
