How will my room be furnished?
Each residence hall room has one bed, desk, desk chair, dresser and closet or wardrobe for each student assigned to the room.
Can I get more furniture?
We only have enough pieces of each type of furniture in stock to replace items that should become broken or damaged. As a result, we cannot fulfill requests for additional furniture.
What size are the beds?
All residence hall beds are extra long twin size, 80” x 36”. Sheets for this size mattress are available at almost any store that carries bedding.
Can I store things under my bed?
You can raise your bed so that you have more storage available underneath. On its highest setting, the height under your bed will fit the dresser.
What other storage is available?
None. Anything that you need to store will need to remain in your room. Because the space in your room will be limited, it is recommended that you send boxes, luggage, etc back home with your family.
Is my room carpeted?
Generally only the bedrooms in Curley Court and Caldwell are carpeted. HS offers a carpet sale program through one of our vendors. If you order early, the carpet will be waiting in your room for you when you arrive. Additional on-campus sales will also be available.
What is the largest refrigerator and microwave I can have in my room?
Residents are permitted one refrigerator and microwave per room. We recommend a micro-fridge unit, similar to the one offer by one of our vendors. If you will purchase your own, please know that for electrical reasons, refrigerators should not exceed 300 watts or 2.5 amps and they must be less than 36” tall. Microwaves cannot exceed 600 watts or 5 amps.
What if I forget to bring something?
There are plenty of places to shop in DC! Almost any store that you have at home (or one similar) can be found within 30 minutes of campus.
What if I don’t like my room?
On the day of check-in, you will need to check-in to the room to which you have been assigned. If you wish to request a new room once you arrive to campus, you may do so through the Room Change Request process. For administrative reasons, there is a period at the beginning of each semester during which room changes will normally not be considered in order to verify occupancy and identify vacancies. In addition, it is the philosophy of Housing Services and Residence Life that continual room changes are a disruption to the formation of strong and healthy communities. Therefore, room change requests will be reviewed and approved when it is reasonable to do so.
